A stoic and disciplined martial artist with three eyes. He once confronted Goku and his friends as an enemy in the World Tournament, but over time eventually became a trusted ally. After leaving the Crane School, he and his friend and fellow martial artist Chiaotzu have been working hard on their farm and traveling the world hoping to better themselves.
In addition to his Crane School techniques, Tien can also produce multiple arms from his back, create clones of himself, and perform many other unique feats. His techniques all come with some risk, but his most dangerous one is his [tag:482201 Tri-Beam], which saps him of life energy. He has used this attack on multiple occasions to protect his allies in battle.
During his time as a Crane School student, Tien became close friends with fellow student Chiaotzu. After Chiaotzu sacrificed himself, Tien used his Tri-Beam technique to avenge his friend, but at the cost of his own life, proving that the two of them are inseparable in both life and death. Launch seems to be rather infatuated with Tien, but how he feels about her remains a mystery.

Equipped with the knowledge that powerful androids would arrive in three years, Tien quickly began to train with his friend Chiaotzu. During his training, he improved his Tri-Beam technique and developed the Neo Tri-Beam, which allows him to fire multiple blasts. However, the additional power came with even greater risk to his health.
Rather than try to keep up with Goku, Vegeta, and the other warriors not from Earth, who continued to reach seemingly impossible levels of power, Tien instead chose to refine his techniques as a martial artist. He didn't participate directly in the Cell Games, but he still showed up to support his friends in their fight to protect the planet.
