In 1988, Gaku Yashiro is shown to be a kind, charismatic, understanding, responsible and bright, albeit eccentric teacher that Satoru Fujinuma looks up to. He is a helpful adult confidant and would-be father figure to Satoru, providing useful information and overall being an inspiration to him.

SPOILER: However, this is a façade hiding the shadow of evil. In actuality, Yashiro is the psychopathic killer of Kayo Hinazuki, Sachiko Fujinuma and dozens of other people, mainly children. He is a cunning, manipulative, delusional and methodical man who enjoys murdering victims to "fill his heart." The teacher eventually reveals his true identity as the kidnapper to Satoru when he meddled with his plans. Yashiro tries to kill him through drowning him in a frozen lake, but this fails. Instead, Satoru is put in a long term coma and Yashiro becomes smitten with the protagonist because he filled his heart through his miraculous survival and unanswered questions. In 2003, Yashiro cannot live without Satoru, who has awakened from his coma after 15 years. Now going by the name Manabu Nishizono, he is a respected politician. Eventually, Satoru and his friends outwit the serial killer and have him arrested.

The original timeline in 2006 still has him as Manabu Nishizono. He attempts kidnapping a little girl, but Sachiko Fujinuma catches him in the act. He follows her home afterwards and kills her in order to silence her. Satoru finds her dead body and panics, which began the phenomenon of revival that takes him back in time to 1988 to stop Gaku Yashiro.
