In 2006, he is a 29 year old struggling manga artist who works part-time at Oasi Pizza to make his living. Satoru Fujinuma is a shy introvert who represses his feelings. He puts on an aloof front because he is scared to dig deep into himself. Both regarding his emotions and his past. He hardly made any meaningful bonds in his life, instead menially pretending to get along with people. However, he is a naturally good-willed individual that will put others before himself. Satoru suffers from a mysterious phenomenon called revival, which snaps him back in time between 1-5 minutes. Whenever revival happens, Satoru knows it is to prevent something bad from happening. He begrudgingly plays along with the revival time-loop, preventing multiple potential tragedies even if it means he has to negatively suffer for it. One day, Satoru Fujinuma is framed for murder and revival suddenly sends him back in time to 1988.
In 1988, 10 year old Satoru Fujinuma is an average fifth grader who attends Mikoto Elementary School in the Hokkaido prefecture. He has a small but diverse friend group with a secret hideout hangout spot. He admires a sentai hero called "Wonder Guy." Now, the consciousness of a 29 year old Satoru is within his fifth grade self. It is up to Satoru to prevent his own tragic fate while learning about the meaning of bonds along the way.
He becomes concerned and curious about Kayo Hinazuki, his classmate who originally disappeared in 1988. Satoru befriends and protects her, knowing he could try to prevent her tragic fate this time. He learns how to open up emotionally to others and in return he empathizes with them too, becoming a more outgoing person. Satoru truly understands what it means to have trustworthy relationships when he puts his foot forward and grabs the bull by the horns, inspired by his friends, his mother and his teacher.
