Kazuki is a 14-year-old middle school student, and the protagonist of the story. Shortly before the story began, Kazuki's personality changed abruptly. Once a promising soccer player, he has now withdrawn from the soccer club and isolates himself from his doting family and best friend. His only remaining connection is his little brother, who he texts while pretending to be a local idol, Sara Azuma.
After an encounter with the new transfer student, Toi Kuji, he, as well as Toi and his friend Enta, are turned into kappas by the kappa prince, Keppi. In order to return to their human forms, they must extract the shirikodama of kappa zombies, and return the shirikodama to Keppi by connecting to one another and performing the 'Sarazanmai'.
