Otome Games or 乙女ゲーム (lit. maiden games) are a genre of story and romance-centric video games which are primarily marketed to a female audience. Most otome games feature multiple male protagonists, although some titles choose to focus on a single hero for the heroine to interact with. The primary goal of otome games are to win the affection of the player's chosen love interest. The Angelique series is widely credited with popularizing the genre. The original Angelique was released solely in Japan in 1994, and was developed and created by Koei's Ruby Party, a team focused on creating games for female gamers by female developers.
The majority of modern otome games take the form of straightforward visual novels, although there are otome games which are more traditional dating simulators, such as the Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side series. Just as with romance games aimed towards a male audience, otome protagonists vary from characters intended to be used as player self-inserts, to defined characters who the player is instead meant only to relate to. Some otome games do feature female character which the protagonist can pursue, although these are somewhat rarer and vary from close friendship to actual romances.
Like shoujo and josei manga, manga aimed at girls and young women respectively, otome games may share common themes and tropes, but they are more games aimed at a demographic than a true genre. While romance is almost always the central focus or 'goal' of an otome game, they can still cover a wide variety of topics such as school and work life, murder mysteries, historical and political conflicts, and supernatural themes.
