Sakamoto Ryoma, based on the historical figure of the same name is the protagonist of Like a Dragon: Ishin. This fictional representation of Ryoma was the most skilled swordsman of Tosa. Adopted by Yoshida Toyo, Ryoma alongside his brother Takechi Hanpeita had plans to restore the Tosa government, Hanpeita being the founder of the Tosa Loyalists. During the evening, an incident happened. Toyo was killed by a mysterious masked man who utilized the Tennen Rishin style of combat. After being wrongfully framed for the murder of his father, Ryoma fled and was exiled from Tosa.
Under the alias of Saito Hajime, he searched for users of the Tennen Rishin style to find the murderer from that night. His searches ended up bringing him to the doors of the Shinsengumi, in which he infiltrated by climbing up their ranks and becoming the captain of the third division.
