On joining his half-brother Yoritomo's army, he defeated the Taira one by one, finishing them off at the battle of Dan-no-ura. Later, he was pursued by Yoritomo's army and killed himself at Koromogawa. His bold ingenuity and ruthless skill with a blade are still praised in Japan today.
