Cody had started to make appearances in major appearances in companies like Total Nonstop Wrestling, New Japan Pro Wrestling, and Ring of Honor. This improved his stock majorly as he had a new look, moveset, and presentation about himself by calling himself "The American Nightmare". People began to take notice how much he changed and how good he truely was. He used this momentum alongside fellow major wrestling stars Kenny Omega, Nick Jackson, and Matthew Jackson to help start up All Elite Wrestling. They wanted an alternative to WWE when it comes to major American wrestling promotions for viewers to tune into. They used their star power to help elevate other wrestlers who weren't known to casual audiences and help bring in older stars that wanted to give a shine to AEW during it's early days. Cody went on to have some memorable feuds and was the initial TNT Champion in AEW.
A few years after Codys first showing in AEW, the fans were beginning to turn against him as the people were either a fan of other wrestlers on the brand or starting to dislike him as his promo styles and in-ring style were more in-tune of WWE rather than a hard hitting, physical styles of AEW. Especially since Cody had stated he always wanted to return to WWE to win the WWE World Championship one day and that made him seem like a traitor to the company he helped built. Cody had enough of the backlash and ultimately left AEW in early 2022.
At WrestleMania 38, Cody Rhodes made his return to the WWE to a well received ovation. Since then, Cody has had major victories over the likes of Seth Rollins, Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, Drew McIntyre, and the Judgement Day. His biggest accomplishments have been winning the Royal Rumble in back to back years, main eventing WrestleMania in back to back years, and winning the WWE World Heavyweight championship.
